FAQs
What is the difference between health promotion and health education?
Health education focuses on helping people understand health information and make informed choices. Health promotion is broader. It can also address services, environments, policies and social conditions that shape health choices and influence health outcomes.
A health promotion course therefore looks beyond the message itself. It considers whether people have the opportunity, resources and support they need to act on health information.
Does behavior change focus only on individual responsibility?
No. Effective health behavior change considers both personal factors and the wider environment in which decisions are made.
Motivation and knowledge matter, but access, culture, income, policy, social support and the design of services can all affect behavior. Good interventions avoid blaming individuals for barriers they cannot control.
What makes a behavior change intervention effective?
An effective intervention begins with a clearly defined behavior, an understanding of the audience and evidence about the barriers and influences involved.
A behavior change course helps professionals look beyond awareness campaigns by connecting objectives, behavior change techniques and delivery methods to measurable outcomes and the needs of a particular community.
How can professionals tell whether a health promotion initiative is working?
Evaluation should measure more than participation or satisfaction. Depending on the initiative, teams may examine changes in knowledge, confidence, behaviour, service use, health outcomes or inequalities.
They should also consider whether the change can reasonably be linked to the intervention. This approach to evaluation is an important part of evidence-based public health training.
How can health promotion knowledge support professional development?
Knowledge from a health promotion course can support work in public health, healthcare, community services, patient education, policy, workplace wellbeing and non-profit organizations.
It does not replace a regulated professional qualification, but it can help practitioners design more thoughtful interventions, communicate health information effectively and assess whether an approach is achieving its intended impact.
